Alex & Cindy - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Jan 31

Where you and your partner are from?

  • Alex: I am born in The Netherlands.
  • Cindy:  My roots are in Kumasi (Ghana), but I was born in Germany.

Both of your age?

  • Alex: is 32
  • Cindy: is 31

How did you two meet and what was your first impression(s)?

  • We met online on a dating site. The funny thing is that it was actually an American dating site and we soon found out we not only lived in Amsterdam, The Netherlands … but that we also lived only 5 minutes apart from each other.
  • Cindy: My first impression of Alex was the cutest man in the world and his smile caught my attention from the start.
  • Alex: Cindy sent me a first interest on the dating site and when I saw her photo (but also her profile) I was blown away. I was really interested to get to know her from that moment.

How long you have been together?

  • We have been together for 2,25 years now.

What has been the response from your families and friends in regards to dating outside of your race?

  • Cindy: They are really happy and acceptable about it. Especially my mother is very supportive of it.
  • Alex: For me the reactions from my friends and family are very positive. I have been raised in a home (although living in a small town) where race was never an issue. My parents and brothers and sisters greeted Cindy with open arms as well as our children of course.

On the funny side: What stereotype(s) have you found to be true or false?

  • Cindy:  TRUE: White men can't dance … my hubby included.
FALSE: I have found out that the stereotype that white man can't perform in bed is false
  • Alex:    TRUE: African woman has a temperament. So that is a very nice contrast to my down-to-earth nature.
FALSE: When a black woman date/marry a white man it is always for money or papers. This is so false!

What advice would you have for someone thinking to get into or newly entered in an IR relationship?

  • Alex: Don't date someone just because you want to date somebody with a certain color (of course you can and will fall in love also because of the skin color), but the most important thing is to fall in love with the person itself and not just the color of her/his skin.
  • Cindy: Be yourself. You have to stand by your man or woman no matter what. Even if someone would call you a race traitor. Because color is only skin deep.

What have you learn from one another or the best advice you have ever received from your partner?

  • Alex: Don't just accept what you have (job, financial status, and such) but Always pursue for better. I did this in a job. After a few months I noticed I didn't like a job and she motivated me to search for a new job (and not be afraid to lose that job) and I did find a new job that is perfect for me.
  • Cindy: Alex Always tells me that I have to pursue things I want. And not let other people determine what I should do (also not my mother, or friends). And also that I shouldn't focus on what other people want or think of me, because it can really take away your joy.
