Laquel & Wes - Oakland, California
May 10
This Week Interracial Couple | Friday 05/10/2013
-
Laquel: I was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, 34 years old
I'm black and Wes is white of Scottish decent - Wes: I was born in Annapolis, Maryland, 39 years old
-
Together: A little over 4 years.
When, Where and/or How did you meet your BF/GF/Wife/Husband?
- Laquel: I had posted an ad on Craigslist and Wes responded! We talked for a bit on email, then went to the phone (he had a sexy voice!), and we first met in person at a bookstore in Jack London Square here in Oakland.
-
Wes: When we knew the date was going well we had dinner at a sushi place called Yoshi's that was nearby.
What was your first impression of your partner?
- Laquel: I thought he was cute! He had longer hair than what was in his picture so I wan't totally sure it was him at first, lol. He was sexy.
-
Wes: I thought she had fake boobs (Laquel: and I don't!!). She was cute and had an amazing body. I didn't totally click with her at first. It was a good meeting but I didn't fall madly in love initally.
Have you tried the cuisine from your partners culture? If yes, which is your favourite dish and why?
-
Laquel: This doesn't really apply since we're both born and raised in the US. I like grits though and Wes doesn't. But he does like BBQ, chicken wings, and watermelon, lol.
What responses have your friends/family had to your relationship with your partner?
They're all for it.
- Laquel: When I was younger my mom did want me to bring home a black guy. But she found early on that I was mostly attracted to white guys and she is perfectly fine with it. She LOVES Wes, they go out to dinner and talk on the phone without me being there, lol.
-
Wes: Out of my parents my mom was the most uncomfortable with me dating black women, but it didn't last very long. All of my friends are used to me dating black women.
What stereotype(s) have you found to be TRUE and/or FALSE with your partner?
- Laquel: I've heard that white men will where shorts in any kind of weather. This is so true for Wes.
-
Wes: I can't think of any stereotypes that are true about Laquel. I don't hold to most stereotypes.
False - Laquel: White men can't dance..kinda true. He can't dance but he CAN break dance! White guys have no butt. Wes totally has a cute butt!
-
Wes: She pretty much breaks the mold. Laquel is most non-black person I have ever met, lol. Most black women seem to wear their emotions on their sleeve and Laquel was the total opposite. Now that we've known each other she has totally overcome that and is much more open.
What advice would you have for someone who is hesitant but would like to start an IR relationship?
-
Laquel: Just do it. You shouldn't stop yourself from dating someone just because they are a different race. If you're attracted to someone treat them like every other person and see how it goes. Don't be afraid to ask someone out, or start talking to someone just because you think they may not date outside their race. You'd be surprised.
Love crosses color lines so don't be afraid to step out of your box. -
Wes: The best relationships come from things that are unexpected or unplanned for. Experiment, date various people and see what works for you. See what you are attracted to. I always ask my friends: were your best relationships that ones that you fit your criteria, or were they the ones that were unexpected.
What is best advice you have ever received from your BF/GF/Wife/Husband?
- Name: He's given me great advice on following my dreams (and I do the same for him). He always give me great advice and insights when I discuss my jobs or when I want to brainstorm on different ideas.
-
Name: I don't know if this qualifies as advice. But I admire how Laquel has the drive to be an entrepreneur. She takes risks and tries to do different things with her photography. She loves it and I really admire that.
